Adult Asian lady beetles, more commonly called lady bugs, are widely recognized for their red and orange color and black spots. These creatures do not damage plants or wood structures and can actually be advantageous to have around because they eat plant pests, helping provide some local control of those populations.
Unfortunately, they can become a nuisance when large numbers get inside buildings. Asian lady beetles will start looking in the fall for protected areas in which to overwinter, sometimes entering homes or building in swarms. An infestation can lead to large numbers gathering in attics, window crevices, and walls, giving off a bad odor and possible staining windowsills and floors.
You can reduce the risk of lady bugs getting inside your home by discouraging any gathering of the bugs near windows, doorframes, and soffits.
